Phil the groundhog makes his prediction in 2021.

In 1887 Groundhog Day was created by Clymer Freas. The tradition comes from Candlemas, an ancient Christian holiday where candles would be distributed to the people. They believed if the day was sunny a long winter was coming but if the day was cloudy warm weather would come soon.

If Phil the groundhog sees his shadow it means the next 6 weeks will be filled with winter weather. However if Phil does not see his shadow spring should come early this year.

3 weeks ago Phil the groundhog made his 2021 prediction virtually with a livestream. The stream at most had 15,000 viewers  according to On the stream Phil predicted that there would be 6 more weeks of winter.

Phil only has a 47% accuracy rate. Although this year has been accurate so far. We’ve had wintery weather since the beginning of February and even 5 inches of snow. With this upcoming week that may change. Temperatures in the late 50s are predicted.

Groundhogs are a member of the rodent family. Specifically being one of 14 species of marmot. Groundhogs are normally 18-24 inches tall. Their habitat is normally meadows, streams or forests.
